Two players in a focused UNO duel

Head-to-head duel (1v1)

Most standard rules apply head-to-head; these tweaks keep two-player flow fair and punchy.

Rules & win conditions

Two players face off directly. Most standard rules apply, with these adjustments:

  • Reverse: in 1v1 it works like Skip — after you play it, you immediately take another turn and your opponent skips that round.
  • Skip: your opponent skips; you keep the turn.
  • Draw penalties: the opponent must draw as printed (+2 or +4) and also skips that turn.
  • Faster tempo: with only two players every action card hits hard; seven starting cards is still common, but rounds feel quicker.
  • Win condition: first to empty their hand wins the game. Run multi-game sets (best of 3 / best of 5) for an overall winner.

lightbulbPro strategy

  • check_circle

Exploit the 1v1 Reverse: Treat Reverse as a free extra play: chain it with matching colors to burn down fast while controlling tempo.

  • check_circle

Respect draw chains: If your table allows stacking +2/+4, agree before the duel — official rules often disallow it.

In 1v1, Reverse is your tempo lever — don’t treat it like four-player Reverse.

Review matching and action cards if anything feels ambiguous in head-to-head.
